Thiruppugazh is a Tamil Saint Poem and it's an important part of the Hindu Devotional poetic tradition. It is composed of 5151 verses and comes from the hymns taught to Thirumal by his father, Thiru Parvathi Thulukkuzhal. The poem narrates the story of Shiva and his fierce love for his wife Parvati; known as Uma in Sanskrit literature. It was originally written in Sanskrit but has been translated into several languages such as Telugu, Arabic, Gujarati, Marathi, English and Chinese. Some poems from this poem were initially composed in the Tamil Language and subsequently translated into Sanskrit; this is called as Akam (Tamil to Sanskrit). Akam refers to original Tamil poetry. This translation of the poem is done in such a way as to make it easily understandable for modern readers. The meaning and depth of the poem is enhanced by its language and context. Sadhu Sundar Swami; is a saint, philosopher and author who is known for his ability to communicate with God through meditation. He has authored approximately 60 books and has penned over 2,500 songs which have been translated into many languages around the world. Sadhu Sundar Swami was born on August 30, 1914 at Hillsborough in Canada. He was named as Yoganarasimhan. He was born into a Tamil family and had spiritual leanings from an early age. His mother, who died when he was just six years old, used to take him to Hindu temples where he would stay for hours deep in meditation. It is believed that later in life, Sadhu Sundar Swami would go on to do the same thing; meditate for hours at Rameswaram Temple which is the holiest of the holy sites of Hindus. On his eighth birthday, he became a disciple of Swami Vivekananda who introduced him to meditation and yoga; the two would become the driving forces behind his spiritual path. When he was 16, Sadhu Sundar brought out his first book: "My Beginnings" which was later later published as "Youth and Destiny". Through the years Sadhu Sundar Swami authored many other books; some of which were: The lyrical portions of 'Thiruppugazh' are all very different from Tamil language. Since it is not easy to understand these Sanskrit verses without understanding Tamil meanings it has been done by translating the Sanskrit verses into English using Tamil poetry or English translations. Hence we have three different translations of this poem in English with its meaning and translation and, one with Tamil meanings and translation. Sadhu Sundar Swami has adapted this piece in such a way as to make it easily understandable for modern readers.
